Day 2 – Half day workshops
Saturday 16 February 2019
9am – 6pm (Lunch 1 – 2:30pm)
MORNING (AM) WORKSHOPS | Workshop 1 – Whitney Quesenbery (WQUsability) – Choosing the right UX method It’s easy to read the books and make a list of all the things you should be doing for UX. But how do you make the hard decisions about what research methods or design activities to do and who to include. Every project has a set of questions waiting to be answered. Every UX method provides its own answers. To plan an effective UX project, you have to match questions to answers to choose the right overall approach. The workshop will look at the challenges from both ideal and practical perspectives. Participants will work through a variety of project scenarios, exploring different approaches and finding clever solutions to barriers to doing good UX. |
Workshop 2 – Bas Raijmakers (STBY and Reach) – Design Documentaries – Visual Storytelling The use of video during fieldwork, insight generation and communication of research results is very powerful. It does not necessarily need to be very time consuming and/or expensive, as long as it is well planned and ‘scripted’. This workshop will include hands on exercises with simple methods to do this in agile and participatory ways.
Workshop 3 – Whitney Hess – (Pleasure & Pain) – Creating a culture of UX The responsibility of a user experience practitioner is far greater than improving the usability of interfaces and the organization of site content; we must help to create a culture of continuous feedback, experimentation and iteration. In order to do so we cannot narrowly define ourselves as designers, architects or developers, but instead position ourselves as business strategists. This workshop will teach you how to evangelize the importance of UX practices within your organization, how to gain the confidence of key decision makers, and how to foster partnerships with colleagues in other departments in order to create a sea change.
LUNCH (1:00PM – 2:30PM)
AFTERNOON (PM) WORKSHOPS | Workshop 4 – Geke van Dijk (STBY and Reach) – Multi-Channel Customer Journeys – Connecting the Touch Points Understanding holistic User Experiences requires the exploration of their complete journeys across media and channels. Different way of gathering data, analysing and reporting than traditional UX research focus on the use of digital platforms. This workshop will include hands-on exercises with eliciting and visualising multi-channel customer journeys and analysing recurring behavioural patterns. |
Workshop 5 – Tomer Sharon (Google)- Getting stakeholder buy-in for user experience research projects You must have worked with difficult stakeholders before, during, and after UX studies. Did you have to deal with people who don’t understand or don’t respect UX processes? Do stakeholders let you conduct research? Do they act upon research results? This hands-on workshop is designed for user experience and usability research practitioners (both designers and researchers) who wish to learn and share their knowledge to make sure research is engaging software engineers, product managers, and executive management.
Workshop 6 – Lou Rosenfeld (Lou Rosenfeld Consulting and Rosenfeld Media) – Site Search Analytics Does your site have a search engine? If so, you’re sitting on an often under-utilized pot of gold: search query data that describes what your customers really want from your site—in their own words. Analysing this semantically rich data will help you to better diagnose and solve problems with your site’s content, navigation, and search performance. In this workshop, Lou Rosenfeld—author of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web and Search Analytics for Your Site—will combine lecture, discussion, and hands-on exercises to get you started with site search analytics. And he’ll show you how spending even an hour a week analysing your search queries can help tune and improve your site, and expose new opportunities for improving your business strategy. |
Speakers
Lou Rosenfeld
Lou Rosenfeld is an independent information architecture consultant, and founder and publisher of Rosenfeld Media, a publishing house focused on user experience books. He has been instrumental in helping establish the fields of information architecture and user experience, and in articulating the role and value of librarianship within those fields.
As a graduate student in library and information studies in the late 1980s, Lou became convinced that the skills of librarians were grossly undervalued — in the coming information explosion, who else would supply the skills of organizing, classifying and labeling information?
As the Web sped that explosion along, Lou realized that additional skills and perspectives were required to develop coherent, intuitive structures — information architectures — that made web content accessible to users. At Argus Associates, a pioneering consulting company that Lou co-founded in 1991, those additional perspectives — usability engineering, ethnography, technology analysis and others — were successfully folded into the mix, and the company became perhaps the best-known firm in the field of information architecture.
Lou served as Argus’ president from 1994-2001. Named a “Technology Pioneer” by Crain’s Detroit Business, Lou has consulted for such organizations as Paypal, Accenture, AT&T, Caterpillar, the Centers for Disease Control, Ford, and Microsoft.
With Peter Morville, Lou co-authored the best-selling book, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web (O’Reilly, 1998; second edition, 2002; third edition, 2006), Amazon.com’s “Best Internet Book of 1998.” With over 150,000 in sales, it has been acclaimed as a classic and is used as a standard text in many graduate-level classes. His newest book, Search Analytics for Your Site, was published by Rosenfeld Media in June of 2011. Lou has contributed regular columns for CIO, Internet World and Web Review magazines, and has written and edited numerous other books, chapters, and scholarly articles.
Lou has participated heavily in efforts to coalesce the information architecture and user experience communities. He is co-founder and past board member of the IAI, the Information Architecture Institute, the sole professional organization of information architects. Lou played a leading role in organizing and programming the first three information architecture conferences (the 2000 and 2001 ASIS&T Summits and ACIA 2000) and continues to serve on the Summit’s program committee. He is co-founder and current president of UXnet, an organization that supports cooperation and collaboration among UX-related organizations and individuals. And Lou serves or has served on advisory boards for the Content Management Professionals group, the AIGA Experience Design Community, the Interaction Design Association, and UX Matters magazine.
Lou has presented and moderated at dozens of professional and academic events, and has taught popular tutorials for the Nielsen Norman Group. Each year since 2002, Lou has embarked on a six-city speaking tour with usability expert Steve Krug; Lou also teaches in-house seminars.
In 1993, Lou founded a popular Internet research service, the Argus Clearinghouse, an early and successful demonstration of the application of librarianship to making Web content more accessible. And while at the University of Michigan, Lou designed and co-taught some of the first academic courses that dealt specifically with designing information for access on the Internet.
Lou holds a Masters in Information and Library Studies and a B.A. in History, both from The University of Michigan. He lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife, Mary Jean Babic, and their children, Iris and Nate.

Bas Raijmakers
Bas Raijmakers is creative director at STBY, and along with Geke, one of our founders. Like all of our senior design researchers, Bas has been involved with a wide range of different service design projects. He is particularly involved with much of our video work, having developed the ‘Design Documentary’ format himself in his PhD thesis. Bas is a frequent contributor to a range of academic journals (you can find many of his articles in the publications section), and has delivered keynote addresses at a number of service design conferences.
Bas has been working in the Internet and media industry as a consultant and research manager since the early nineties. Together with Geke, he co-founded ACS-i media research projects in 1993. After the company grew to a 25 people enterprise, it was acquired by Lost Boys International in Amsterdam, whom Bas joined as Usability Director.
STBY arose at least in part from Bas’ fascination with how people use, understand and appreciate media in contemporary popular culture. Since the rise of public Internet his focus has been on new media, ranging from hacker cultures to more mainstream uses of the Internet. In his many research projects he has provided evidence that it is the people who use new media offerings, not seldom in unanticipated ways, determine the true meaning and value of it.
Bas holds an MA in Communication Sciences from the University of Amsterdam (1990) and a PhD degree in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London (2007). He currently splits his time between STBY’s London and Amsterdam offices.
Bas Raijmakers’s Workshop – Design Documentaries – Visual Storytelling FULL

It does not necessarily need to be very time consuming and/or expensive, as long as it is well planned and ‘scripted’.

Geke van Dijk
Geke, along with Bas, is a co-founder of STBY, and currently serves as our strategy director. An expert in the field of Consumer Behaviour Research and Human-Computer Interaction, Geke also specialises in more general marketing issues and business strategy. A key theme of her work is that the changing expectancies and demands of contemporary consumers put pressure on suppliers to offer their services seamlessly through multiple channels. Consumers appreciate being able to pick and mix from these multichannel service offerings as they like, thereby co-producing the actual service experience. This perspective is often incorporated into the projects Geke leads at STBY as one of our most experience design researchers.
Geke’s approach has been shaped by nearly two decades working on studies that focus upon emerging technologies. She has worked as a consultant and researcher in the Internet industry since the early nineties, and in 2007 completed a PhD in Computer Sciences with the Open University (in close collaboration with their Business School).
She currently splits her time between the offices of STBY in Amsterdam and London, and serves as project lead for both corporate and public sector clients.
