Steve Baty

…is founder & principal consultant at Meld Studios, has over 13 years’ experience in the design and delivery of e-business services. Steve is a well-known practitioner in the area of experience strategy and architecture, writing articles for industry publications and presenting at local conferences.

Steve serves as Vice President of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA); is a regular contributor to UXMatters.com; serves as an editor and contributor to Johnny Holland (johnnyholland.org), and is the founder of UX Book Club – a world-wide initiative bringing together user experience practitioners in over 80 locations to read, connect and discuss books on user experience design. Steve is also co-Chair of UX Australia – Australia’s leading conference for User Experience practitioners.

Steve has, over the past five years, led user experience teams to develop online strategies and experience architectures for clients across a broad spread of industries including: tourism, travel, transport, consumer electronics, manufacturing, government, and the arts.

Steve holds post-graduate degrees in electronic commerce (M.Ec) and business administration (MBA) from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management; and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (Physical Mathematics & Applied Statistics) from UTS.

Janna DeVylder

…is the former Director of Interactive Communication at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in Savannah, Georgia. She managed a multi-disciplinary team overseeing the university’s websites and was a key contributor to how SCAD utilized digital channels to meet its brand and communication strategies. Prior to SCAD, Janna directed a team of interaction designers for Arc Worldwide, a Leo Burnett company. In addition, she has led large-scale strategy, information architecture and user experience projects for Orbitz, McDougal Littell and Giant Step. Janna is very active in the community, serving as the President of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA), an international organization dedicated to advancing the discipline of interaction design.

Janna received her master’s degree from the University of Chicago with an emphasis in psychology and anthropology, and holds an honor’s Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Iowa.

Steve and Janna’s Workshop – Experience Strategy FULL

The workshop will cover Experience Strategy: providing a broad definition to begin for both Experience and Strategy, and what we mean by an Experience Strategy. We’ll look at how to align Experience Strategy with the rest of the organization, and at how to define experience strategies that provide for consistent customer interactions regardless of channel.

The workshop will look at the elements of an experience strategy, and how each element can be designed and defined. Throughout the workshop there will be activities for participants to undertake to deepen their understanding of the concepts being presented.

Participants will:

  • Have a clear understanding of Experience Strategy
  • Have structure they can use to define Experience Strategies for their organization; and
  • Have an understanding of how to implement an Experience Strategy across channels – online, mobile, and over-the-counter, etc.

Steve Portigal

…is the founder of Portigal Consulting (http://www.portigal.com/), a bite-sized San Francisco firm that brings together user research, design and business strategy. Portigal Consulting helps clients to discover and act on new insights about themselves and their customers. In addition to regularly speaking at design and marketing events, Steve has taught Design Research at the California College of Art and the Involution Master Academy.

He writes regularly for interactions magazineCore77, and the Portigal Consulting blog, All This ChittahChattah. Steve is an avid photographer who has a Museum of Foreign Grocery Products in his home.

Steve’s Workshop – “Well, we’ve done all this research, now what?” FULL

One of the most persistent factors limiting the impact of user research in business is that projects often stop with a cataloging findings and implications rather than generating opportunities that directly enable the findings. As designers increasingly become involved in using contextual research to inform their design work, they may find themselves holding onto a trove of raw data but with little awareness of how to turn it into design. How can designers and researchers work with user research data to create new things for business to do?

Participants will:

  • Collaborate in teams to experience an effective framework for synthesizing raw field data
  • Learn how to move from data to insights to opportunities
  • Experience techniques for generating ideas and strategies across a broad scope of business and design concerns
  • Develop a range of high-level concepts that respond to a business problem and integrate a fresh, contextual understanding of that problem

Rachel Hinman

…is a designer, researcher and a recognized thought leader in the mobile user experience field. Her passion for people, design, and the belief that technology should be used to improve the human condition has been the driving force of her career for the last decade.

Currently, Rachel is a senior user experience researcher at the Nokia Research Center in Santa Monica, California. There, she joins a team of talented team focused on the research and design of emergent and experimental user interface as well as mobile experiences for emerging markets. Prior to joining Nokia, Rachel was an experience design director at Adaptive Path, and a mobile researcher and strategist for Yahoo’s mobile group. Rachel’s innate sensitivity to people and culture have proven powerful skills in the field, enabling her to successfully lead research studies on mobile phone usage in the US, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Rachel received a Masters Degree in Design Planning from the Institute of Design in Chicago. She is the creative force behind the 90 Mobiles in 90 Days Project and her perspectives on mobile user experience has been featured in Interactions Magazine, BusinessWeek, Wired, Wireless Informatics Magazine. She writes and speaks frequently on the topic of mobile research and design. Her clients and previous employers have included IDEO, Microsoft, Yahoo! Mobile, Nokia, and Kaiser Permanente.

Rachel’s Workshop – Mobile User Experience Essentials FULL

Until recently, mobile user experiences were crippled due to carrier, product, interface and technical constraints. Recent innovations, such as the iPhone, Nokia N900 and Google’s Nexus One are causing an inflection point in the mobile UX landscape, enabling new and exciting opportunities for interaction design. The opportunity for user experience professionals to deliver on the promise of ubiquitous computing and interactions that dissolve into behavior is ours for the taking. But where do designers begin? This workshop is designed to help designers and user experience professionals answer that very question.

Participants will:

  • Learn research techniques, design exercises and prototyping methods that will allow you to begin designing and developing mobile experiences with confidence
  • Identify the portable user experience and interaction design skills you’ve already got that make you especially well suited for creating great mobile experiences
  • Learn frameworks, design principles and technical shortcuts for creating compelling mobile experiences
  • Be inspired to hop on the mobile user experience wave

Gerry Gaffney

…is director and principal consultant of usability consultancy Information & Design. As well as taking the lead in all significant projects undertaken by Information & Design, he has lectured at post-graduate level, and writes and speaks frequently on usability and related topics in a variety of forums. He has conducted seminars, usability training and presentations in Australia, Taiwan, Italy, USA, China, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

He was the managing editor of User Experience (the UPA print magazine, produced in USA) for two years from 2007 to 2008. He is an active member of the editorial board.

He produces and publishes the popular User Experience Podcast.

He is co-author, with Daniel Szuc, of The Usability Kit, published in 2006 by Sitepoint. He is co-author, with Caroline Jarrett, of ‘Forms That Work – Designing Web Forms for Usability’, published by Morgan Kaufmann in 2008.

Gerry’s Workshop – The Essential UX Toolkit FULL

This hands-on workshop will explain the purpose and usage of a small set of key tools. The primary focus will be on user needs analysis, since this is fundamental to the design process. The workshop will describe how to conduct analysis, and how to apply this analysis throughout the design process.

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of what design activities may be conducted
  • Learn how to choose appropriate design activities for their project and budget
  • Learn how to create personas and scenarios that enable them to apply what they discover during analysis
  • Learn about participatory design

Each participant will receive a workbook, as well as soft
